I think that Henry was like this because something happened to him while he was off at war. I think he made plenty of friends while he was there. But, the issue was that they all died. Or even that he couldn't take seeing all of the dead people around him. He didn't know what to do with himself. So, that one day when he told Lyman it was very hot, he was going to go for a swim, I think he purposely drowned and committed suicide. I also thought that when Lyman let the red convertible go into the river where Henry died, it was very symbolic. The red convertible represented the two brothers relationship. It had its ups and downs just like the relationship.

The Red Convertible
What happened, I think, was that Henry was just way too depressed. He came home from the war and was not the same as he was before. He wasn't active anymore. He didn't talk a lot. He had his head glued to the television. He was like a mute. Didn't communicate with anybody. Almost like a lost cause.
