The Analyzation of the Poem "We Real Cool"

Poet: Gwendolyn Brooks

Poem’s Title: We Real Cool

 

  1. The structure of the poem is two lines of rhyming then a new paragraph.
  2. The key words/patterns are rhyming. The first paragraph rhymes with cool, the second is late, the third is sin, and the last is June.
  3. Vocab- 1. Lurk- to stay hidden as if waiting for something

2. Gin- alcohol

 

  1. What is going on in the poem is that pool players are being described. What they have done and what they do.
  2. The literary speaker (the person speaking in the poem) is one of the pool players.
  3. The dominant images made (decription, 5 senses) are they taste the gin.

 

  1. The poet’s attitude toward the subject is that pool players aren’t good people and they are going to die from fooling around too much.
  2. The authors diction (use of big words) and employment of poetic devices conveys that this was a very easy poem to write and that anybody can understand it.
